On Dedication: Jake Stangel
Part 5 of our series On Dedication
Jake Stangel about what keeps him motivated and inspired:
“I listen to a lot of music, I try to get outside as much as I can (but it’s still not enough), I try to only spend as much time in front of my computer. I try to not let photography become a business. I try to keep as much enjoyment in my practice and business as possible and never pay attention or get dragged down by bullshit out there.
I try to stay inspired by doing everything from looking at everything from back issues of Aperture to going to the library to look at books, and especially by doing things that are good for my brain, like reading the newspaper on newsprint and the new yorker on paper. And I listen to NPR. Water plants. Cook food. Ride a bike. See a friend. Surf a wave.
I think “stimulation” and “inspiration” go hand in hand…. I’m inspired when mentally stimulated. It’s not all about looking at great photography, as amazing as it is. I find I often want to make photos after walking a little bit, so now I even do that before shoots.”
Thanks a lot, Jake!
