COLE BARASH_PHOTO: The Journey to the unknown..

Drinking beers at 3am last night with a bunch kids on a roof top and I start talking to this girl who said something that really stuck in my head.  Recently, she had been working with some jazz musicians….She said:

“They are not worrying about if they have the next gig booked, they are enjoying the art of the gig”

For all the heads out there that are busting ASS on your own dime with out a trust fund, working endlessly towards a goal of love and freedom of your vision, don’t give up- and don’t forget to ENJOY it along the way because in the end-thats what its all about….  

I spent 6 days in Puerto Rico this January shooting for a small company, Proof Lab.  Here are a few selects.

The above image was used for the global campaign of Kelly Slater for Quiksilver  by Todd Glaser.  

A lot of surf photography as similar to snowboard and skate photography starts to look the same to me.  A shot of a barrel from the inside looking out to the sun, a guy punting above the lip, an empty lineup shot, etc starts to blend all together and becomes “surf porn.”  

This image above does not fall into that catagorey, as its a moment of Kelly not in action but of him showing his love and stoke for that wave that passed, a truly non selfish moment.  These type of images are not often ran especially in advertising and are often looked over and passed on.  I was really hyped to see this documented and pushed by Glaser as I think its a very strong authentic image of one of the worlds best.  

A simple but clever series that is graphic and interesting.  You don’t need to travel 5000 miles, have a $5000 camera, or have a huge budget to make a personal project good.  Seems like the best ones are always simple but interesting.
